I went to repair a small water drip in my bathroom sink, by the end of the day I had purchased a new sink, new vanity, and a new fixture. I had also dumped 15 gallons of water on the floor and broken and isolation valve that requi red me to put a hole in the wall to repair.
Needless to say I burned that vanity in my fire pit.

yikes... but tbh...thats pretty much what i expected to happen here too...figured something would go wrong... tho...ill admit i wasnt expecting the nut to just sort of fall off the moment i touched it with a wrench..... but still...all...things considered...could be worse

Irony.

I kept having to replace toilet valves, like every 6 months. Finally figured out that the incoming pressure relief valve was fucked. Those poor valves were seeing 70 p si. i’m lucky nothing else failed.

Maybe the problem is that your toilet is
shit...

Working on older plumbing is always a crap shoot.....you never know when you’re going to hit snake-eyes.
Sometimes is best to hedge your bet and get someone at the master shutoff, just in case.

Please tell your friend that these are not a viable way to sanitize your insides from COVID.

If it is the nut on the water supply to the tank, be very careful. The line the nut threads into is probably plastic. Overtighten it and some time years from now the plastic may shear giving you the result of your picture. It happened to a friend.

Yeah lucky for me the master shut off was nearby or that would have made an even bigger mess

Metal nut on either side of the tank but yeah looks to be threading plastic in tank stuff to metal piping out of the tank
Ill be keeping an eye on it cheers

That is nice. Ours is not convenient.

Let the O rings (or seals) do the work. If they are leaking and old, consider replacing them. I had a brass compression fitting I once overtightened and a bout 5 years later the nut split.
Plastic, brass and aluminum don’t like to be overstressed. Fortunately it was still while I had high frequency hearing otherwise it might of shot water across the basement for days.
